Book fortnight Henna Nathwani Science Editor

A bit of history…  Primary and secondary school (GCSEs and A levels)  University “Medicinal Chemistry” degree  Trained to be a secondary school chemistry teacher  Now… work in publishing books and websites for secondary schools to use in class.

What have I worked on?

What am I working on now?  Exams, not teaching materials  Lots of research for the new GCSEs in 2016  What are you going to learn in science when you’re 14 and 15?

How do we get things ready for people to buy?  Lots of steps  Big team which is made of lots of people:  Designers  Editors  Project managers  Digital specialists  Publishers

Step 1: find an author  Who does this?  The publisher  How?  Who wrote things for us last time?  Any good teachers that they know?  Any experts in a specific area?  Another publisher worked with any good authors in the past?

Step 2: development edit  Who does this?  Editor  What happens?  The content is changed around  Editor makes suggestions to author, and everyone agrees!

Step 3: copy edit  Who does this?  The editor

Step 3: copy edit  Can you work out if this text is in the right order? Now that you know what MRS GREN means, can you answer the question ‘is a car alive?’ M for movement R for growth S for sensitivity G for respiration E for excretion N for nutrition Did you know you can use MRS GREN to remember if things are alive or not… each letter stands for a different thing: 1 2 3

Step 3: copy edit

Step 4: expert checks  Editor finds an expert to review the materials  Do you agree with the following statements:  A footballer should review a DVD about how to improve your basketball skills  A scientist should review a science textbook  Who would you find to review…  A magazine about cars  A website for students to find out more about careers?

Step 5: proofread  Who does this?  Editor  What do they do?  Check the final content before it goes to be printed to make sure there are no mistakes.

Step 6: final checks, and... print!  Senior people need to check it and ‘sign it off’  Send it to print!

Who do I work with, and what do we all do?  Designers  Editors  Project managers  Digital specialists  Publishers
