Using Animation and Movie Maker to Support Literacy Sarah Wheeler

“... ICT can dramatically improve achievement levels, inspire creative thinking and encourage the development of skills that will prove invaluable in the real world.” (Jenkin,2010,p.1)

Telling a story through another media  Photos & Video  Animation  Special Effects  Sound  Captions

Integrating Technology into the classroom  Films can be produced for a number of reasons; to inspire, inform, instruct or simply to entertain  We used stop-motion animation which is an animation technique to make a physically, manipulated object appear to move on it’s own  Clay figures are often used in stop motion for their ease of repositioning. This is known as clay animation Who remembers Morph?

Animation can be used to improve literacy skills Producing animation involves many processes:  Storyboarding  Scripting  Developing characters and animated figures  Recording vocals These processes can be used to improve:  Reading  Writing  Speaking and Listening skills  Creative writing  Teamwork All of these processes provide assessment opportunities

Using movie maker is a wonderful way of introducing music into the classroom. Music can be used to create desired moods- to make us happy, to energise us, to bring back powerful memories and help us to relax and focus. Introducing music

The Lesson The children were building upon skills they were already developing from unit 5, film narrative.  Planned story  Produced story board  Researched using ICT skills  Used digital camera  Created characters  Chose music

My Conclusion  Children use skills they are already developing  Gives children a sense of control  Allows them to share their life experiences and express their feelings “Research shows that children who use ICT in school are more motivated and successful and have increased confidence and self esteem.” (Corbett, 2007,p.22-23)
