Henry David Thoreau Life after Walden

Bio Born July 12, 1817 in Concord, Mass. Died May 6, 1862 at age 44 in Concord. Original name: David Henry Thoreau American Author, abolishionist, naturalist, transcendentalist, tax resister, development critic and philosopher Famous for writing “Civil Disobedience” and “Walden”

Civil Disobedience Published in 1849, this book of essays became a touchstone for future generations wishing to defy their government or oppressors. An argument for individual resistance to civil government. It stated that individuals had a duty not to allow their government to overrule or atrophy their consciences.

Walden or “Life in the Woods” Published in 1854, this non-fiction work is revered as the quintessential eco-friendly novel. It details Thoreau’s sojourn in a cabin near Walden pond where he isolated himself from civilization and sought to reflect on society. His writings echo that of Emerson’s trends toward self-reliance and simplicity. Thoreau elegantly outlines an ideal lifestyle free from the pretensions of intellectualism and prosperity.

What Will You Disobey? Choose a cause that you feel strongly about. It could be any political, social, educational or environmental issue. Brainstorm on ideas for a campaign slogan. Create a “Protest Sign” that draws attention to your personal fight for justice (make it visually appealing for maximum impact!). Best posters will hang outside my door and in the upper class hallway.
