 A flood is an overflowing of water beyond its confines. It usually floods onto land.

 Heavy rainfall  Bodies of water do not have enough capacity to hold all of the water when it rains heavily, and it overflows.

 Meteorologists tell by:  How wide an area is getting rain  How long its been raining  How fast the storm is  How hard rain is coming down

 They are measured by how high the water gets by some kind of measurement tool.

 They are not measured by a scale.

 Flash floods can occur in just minuets or hours.

 1. Avoid building in a floodplain  2. Construct barriers to stop floodwater from entering your house  3. Seal walls in basement  4. Listen to radio or television for more info on the flood  5. Know the difference from a flood watch and a flood warning
