Properties of Solutions Postlab session

Recap What is a mixture? What are the two types of mixtures? What is the difference between homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures? What are solutions? What are the two parts of a solution? What is a solute? A solvent? Are solutions always liquid?

Before we move forward… James loves eating fried chicken. Instead of ketchup, he prefer dipping this in vinegar. He prepared vinegar and added a pinch of salt. He mixed the vinegar so the salt will dissolve. Q1: Did James prepare a solution? Q2: What is the solute? Q3: What is the solvent? Q4. If James added ground pepper to his vinegar, will it still be a solution?

Activity 2 compare the evidence gathered with the predictions made; describe the properties of solutions based on observations.

Procedures Predict whether the samples will dissolve in water. Observe which of the liquid samples can be separated through filtration. Place 50 mL water into the clear containers. Properties of Solutions They have uniform appearance. They have a single phase. Their components cannot be separated through filtration.

How can the particles of solutions pass through the filter paper? The particles of solutions are very small that they can pass through the holes of the filter paper!

Why do solutions have uniform appearance? The very small particles of a solution are not seen by the naked eye, thus, we see only one phase!

Properties of solutions Summing it up… Solutions have only one phase thus, they have uniform appearance. The components of solutions cannot be separated through filtration because their particles are very small that they can pass through the holes of the filter paper. Properties of solutions

Going back… If James will filter the vinegar mixed with salt, will he be able to separate the salt from the vinegar? Why?

True or False? Solutions are homogeneous because they have two phases. The particles of a solution are bigger than the holes of a filter paper. The particles of solutions are not visible to the naked eye. Through filtration, the components of a solution can be separated. There is no residue left on the filter paper when solutions are filtered.
