Explore a range of feelings and emotions involved. Illegal Drugs Consider the moral and ethical issues surrounding drugs. Explain the effects of drug use on individuals. Do you think that attitudes towards drug use need to change? Values focus – Rule of Law.

Does the nightclub above look like a good night out? Yes? No? Maybe? It’s obviously a popular nightspot, but for one young man on a night out there, the evening didn’t end quite as he expected it to.

The young man shown in the image is called John. He was 19 and an apprentice engineer. He died after falling ill in a Liverpool nightclub on Boxing Day It is suspected that MDMA tablets played a part in his death. On the same night, a 47 year old man was also taken ill. MDMA tablets were suspected to be involved. He is still critically ill in hospital.

Every young person on this slide has died from taking unknown and illegal drugs. Think about the lives wasted, people who may have made a huge positive contribution to the world. Using Turned Discussion, explore the feelings and emotions that you think their families might have experienced.

Statement from the Police Police are warning the public of the risks of taking illegal drugs and are issuing a specific warning over MDMA tablets, believed to be in circulation in the region. These MDMA tablets appear to be shield shaped, orange/red in colour and bearing a lion/griffin logo on them. Officers are concerned for people who may take them and do not know what they are taking. Detective Chief Inspector Mark Kameen said: “It is not only illegal to buy and sell drugs, but taking illegal substances can also be very dangerous and potentially fatal. We are urging the public not to take any illegal drugs – you don’t know what’s in them, where they’ve come from or what effects they may have on you. “There are significant risks with any drug misuse, especially when it involves drugs bought off the streets from unregulated sources. The effects of drugs are not always immediately apparent or can be delayed. This can sometimes result in people taking more in order to speed up the effects. This can have devastating results. “We are asking people to use their common sense and not to take illegal, unregulated drugs.”

Discussion Do you think attitudes towards drugs need to be changed? Should they be kept illegal, or made legal? Should punishments for drug offenders be more serious?
