How can we keep the atmosphere when we are extending a city? When old city is formed naturally. The context is hard extent to new urban. This idea is mainly made for the issue of city extension.

If you feel the reason of “urban extension” is b*** sh**… …I would tell you the origin idea was for game-map making.

To extent the atmosphere of old urban, I must search an area of old urban. You are here! And this is my site. And by the way, this area is a part of Jhen-bei-fang Cultural Zone.

I feel the paths in this block is one of the elements mainly formed this area. I find out that most part of the block is formed by paths. Some are wide. Most part are narrow. Red color is for temple, market, hospital… but they won’t be used in this case…

In the book “The Image of the City” we can find some characteristics of “Path”.

I follow these rules to define the paths of this block. A “Path” is formed by: 1.The width or narrowness characteristics. 2.A sort of façade. 3.Proximity to special feature. 4.Continuity is a function of an identifiable path. 5.Sudden change will interrupt the continuity of a “Path”. 6.”Path” got directional quality. (gradient, regular change, steady change…) 7.Clear and well-known origins and destinations makes strong identity of a “Path”.

I define there are 2 systems to form this block, this is the part of main “Paths”. They often wider, less corner, smooth, and can won’t be cut be intersections. Connect outside, and don’t end with a path. Connect outside, and end with a path. Connect outside, straight cross the block. Type 1 Type 2 Type 3

They are narrow, with corners, some are short to connect more than 1 paths, some are long to become a secondary system for walking people. And this part is for the smaller “Paths” Type 1 Type 2 Type 3 Connect outside, attach with other “Paths”. The small paths formed secondary system. Short, and link different “Paths”

Each kind of “Path” type got 2 parameters, the amount of paths, the amount of corners. Connect outside, and don’t end with a path. Connect outside, and end with a path. Connect outside, straight cross the block. Total: 1 path 0 corner: 1 Type 2 Type 3 Total: 2 path 0 corner: 1 1 corner: 1 Total: 1 path 0 corner: 1

Connect outside, attach with other “Paths”. This type got 3 parameters, the total, the corners, and attached with others paths in the middle. Total:11 Corners amount 0 corner: 6 1 corner: 2 2 corners: 0 3 corners: 3 Paths touched 0 path: 7 1 path:4

The small paths formed secondary system. This type is more complex… Total:6 Corners amount 0 corner: 0 1 corner: 3 2 corners: 0 3 corners: 2 4 corners: 1 Main paths touched 0 path: 2 1 path: 4 Small paths touched 2 paths: 1 4 paths: 2 5 paths: 1 6 paths: 2

Short, and link different “Paths” Total:8 Corners amount 0 corner: 2 1 corner: 5 2 corners: 1 Main paths touched 0 path: 6 1 path: 2 And the last type, we use total amount, corners, path touched to define this type.

And that all for now…
