INTERPRETING AND COMPARING THEME VARIETY OF FABLES

CONNECTION WE HAVE LEARNED ABOUT THE CHARACTERISTICS OF FANTASY. BY UNDERSTANDING THE STRUCTURE OF FANTASY AND ANALYZING THE CHARACTERS IN A FANTASY, WE HAVE BEEN ABLE TO IDENTIFY ITS THEME, OR WHAT THE AUTHOR WANTS US TO LEARN.

TEACHING POINT TODAY WE WILL IDENTIFY EXAMPLES OF PROVERBS IN ORDER TO INTERPRET THE THEMES. PROVERBS ARE SHORT STATEMENTS OF A GENERAL TRUTH. IT IS A PHRASE OR SAYING THAT GIVES ADVICE IN AN OBSCURE WAY. FOR EXAMPLE, “ABSENCE MAKES THE HEART GROW FONDER.” THIS SAYING MEANS THAT WHEN WE ARE WITHOUT SOMETHING, OR SOMEONE, OUR DESIRE OR WANT FOR IT GROWS STRONGER. FOR EXAMPLE, IF YOUR BEST FRIEND MOVED AWAY AND YOU WERE NOT ABLE TO SEE HIM/HER FREQUENTLY, YOU WOULD PROBABLY REALLY MISS THE INTERACTIONS YOU HAD AND REALLY WISH THAT YOU COULD LIVE IN THE SAME PLACE AGAIN. KNOWING THAT, WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GAIN FROM THIS PROVERB? I THINK IT WOULD BE NOT TO TAKE FOR GRANTED THOSE THAT YOU CARE FOR. YOU SHOULD APPRECIATE THE TIME YOU ARE GIVEN WITH THEM.

LET’S READ A FABLE “THE BUNDLE OF STICKS” AS I READ, LISTEN TO SEE IF YOU CAN IDENTIFY A PROVERB. THE BUNDLE OF STICKS AN OLD MAN ON THE POINT OF DEATH SUMMONED HIS SONS AROUND HIM TO GIVE THEM SOME PARTING ADVICE. HE ORDERED HIS SERVANTS TO BRING IN A BUNDLE OF STICKS, AND SAID TO HIS ELDEST SON: "BREAK IT." THE SON STRAINED AND STRAINED, BUT WITH ALL HIS EFFORTS WAS UNABLE TO BREAK THE BUNDLE. THE OTHER SONS ALSO TRIED, BUT NONE OF THEM WAS SUCCESSFUL. "UNTIE THE BUNDLE," SAID THE FATHER, "AND EACH OF YOU TAKE A STICK." WHEN THEY HAD DONE SO, HE CALLED OUT TO THEM: "NOW, BREAK," AND EACH STICK WAS EASILY BROKEN. "YOU SEE MY MEANING," SAID THEIR FATHER. “UNION GIVES STRENGTH.” THEN WE WILL DISCUSS ITS MEANING IN ORDER TO UNDERSTAND THE THEME. DID ANYBODY HEAR AN EXAMPLE OF A PROVERB? WHAT DOES THIS PROVERB MEAN? IT MEANS THAT WHEN ONE PERSON DOES SOMETHING ALONE THEY USUALLY AREN’T AS SUCCESSFUL AS THEY WOULD BE IF THEY COMPLETED THE TASK TOGETHER. WHAT ADVICE DOES THIS OFFER US (THEME)?. WE CAN LEARN THAT WORKING TOGETHER WITH OTHERS IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN WORKING ALONE.

NOW LISTEN TO “THE FOX AND CROW” AND ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS.“THE FOX AND CROW” “WHAT DOES THE PROVERB MEAN? WHAT ADVICE DOES THIS OFFER US?” PROVERBS PROVIDE UNIVERSAL TRUTHS AND WHEN WE TAKE TIME TO THINK ABOUT THEIR MEANING. WE LEARN LESSONS ABOUT HOW WE CAN LIVE OUR LIVES.

WITH A PARTNER READ THROUGH THE FABLES THE GOOSE WITH THE GOLDEN EGGS AND THE WIND AND THE SUN WITH A PARTNER TO FIND AN ADDITIONAL EXAMPLE OF A PROVERB, DISCUSS: ITS MEANING AND WHAT ADVICE IT OFFERS IN TERMS OF HOW WE LIVE OUR LIVES.

LINK TODAY WE LEARNED THE MEANING OF PROVERBS. WE DISCUSSED HOW UNDERSTANDING PROVERBS CAN GIVE US AN INSIGHT INTO HOW WE SHOULD/COULD LIVE OUR LIVES. AS YOU READ, BE COGNIZANT OF PROVERBS YOU MAY ENCOUNTER. THINK ABOUT WHAT THEY MEAN AND WHAT LESSONS YOU MAY LEARN FROM THEM.
