6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Volume 4 Issue 4 October 8 th, 2015 Special Guests On October 5 th, 2015, two people came to Addison Middle School. They were Dr. Tong and Dr. Helfinstine, retired Corning Incorporated scientists. We used the outdoor classroom to work with catapults. We were split into teams and chose a catapult. They gave us a packet to record our data and a graph to plot our data. We took turns firing the catapult at different angles. We used small erasers that we loaded and released. A person on the team watched where it landed and another person wrote down the distance that the eraser flew. We learned how to angle a catapult to make it go shorter or farther. Finally, we had to use the graph to figure out how to aim our catapult so that we could knock over a target and get candy. By: Bryant Piersons Science Next Week 10/13 Writing claims and evidence based on the Big Question: How can investigating a pendulum help you to become a better scientist. 10/14 Review of the scientific method and variables module. 10/15 Test on the variables module. 10/16 Students will be introduced to the triple beam balance scale. Science Weekly Review 10/5 Dr. Tong and Dr. Helfenstine came to work on a catapult experiment. This went along with the graphing of variables and using graphs to make predictions in our Variables Unit. 10/6 The students used their graphs to make predictions on the number of swings a pendulum would make if it was different lengths. Students investigated and wrote a claim and evidence to show how graphs can be used to make predictions. 10/7 The students worked in groups to find independent and independent variables in sample experiments. 10/8 Students read and answered questions on the article “What Scientists Do.” Resource Room with Miss Smith 9/13 Create a personal academic goal for the week Math Practice Notebook (Multiplication basics and models. 6 th Grade Weekly Newsletter Math with Ms. York Week in Review This week students have expanded their experience with the coordinate plane (5.G.1, 5.G.2) as they represent collections of equivalent ratios by plotting the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Students took one class period to review for the Mid Module Assessment that they either took Wednesday or Thursday of this week. Those students who completed the test on Wednesday took some extra time to review NYS Test questions that pertained to Ratios & Proportions. One of these books has to be based on Social Studies. The first AR book and quiz is due on October 14, This past week students reviewed the Writing Traits for Word Choice and Sentence Fluency. With Word Choice students create a mental picture for the reader by using words that are specific and accurate. The writer uses strong action verbs whenever possible to show the reader what is happening rather than tell the reader. Sentence Fluency is the rhythm and flow of the language, the sound of word patterns, the way in which the writing plays to the ear, not just the eye. ELA Next Week Next week students will finish reviewing the writing traits. We will also begin Module #1, Unit 1. You can find Module #1 here: english-language-artshttps:// english-language-arts Social Studies Next Week On Tuesday students will review the rubric they are using when assessing their essay. They will be working on their rough draft to answer the compelling question. Students will also begin working on what a DBQ (document based question) is and the correct way to answer these. This background information will assist them to research and write their own. DBQ. Social Studies With Ms. Hall This Week This week students discussed the question of the week, “How does analyzing both a local scale map and a small scale provide information about early cultures”? They also discussed who designed the first map and was it a local or small scale map. Students brought in their current event articles and presented them to the class giving the gist of the article. The class discussed how this item would affect us here in Addison. On Wednesday and Thursday classes reviewed with the game jeopardy for the up test on Wednesday, October 14.
