Chapter 2: Building Dreams, Setting Goals

What’s Sylvia’s deal? New year, new Sylvia! Living on-campus away from family and left the boyfriend in the dust High performer in AP and IB courses (so naturally, college and SLS 1501 will be a breeze, right?) First-gen college student Wants to pursue music, but parents want something else for her Parents paying for college Multi-tasking pro

Who Are You? What Do You Want? “Surround yourself with people who take their work seriously, but not themselves, those who work hard and play hard.” --Colin Powell, former U.S. Secretary of State

Multitasking Multitasking actually limits our ability to focus on tasks Multitasking hurts your brain’s ability to learn According to one study, your IQ drops by 10 points when you’re distracted by or phone calls Like the power grid on a hot summer day, multitasking overloads your brain and can cause a “brownout”, or a simple lack of power to meet the need Multitasking can cause extra stress and can actually cost you time, since you’ll constantly need to “reboot” to switch your attention between multiple tasks

Exercise: The Great Countdown Turn to p.34 (“Zoom Out and Wander”)

Is Motivation the Key? How Motivated Are You? Vs. How Are You Motivated? p. 40 “You are never given a wish without the power to make it come true. You may have to work for it, however.” --Richard Bach, from Illusions

Give Yourself an Attitude Adjustment 1.Know that you always have choices. 2.Take responsibility for your own outcomes. 3.Turn down your negativity meter. 4.Turn learning points into turning points. 5.Acknowledge your blessings. “You must motivate yourself EVERY DAY!” --Matthew Stasior, motivational speaker

Should be at the core of much of one’s decision making GOALS – a specific, desired outcome of a situation that you currently have control over. Perfectly matches your values May be long-term (5+ years away) or short-term (this week, this month, today) DREAMS -- a specific optimal (e.g. in a perfect world) outcome of a situation that you may not have full control over.

Dream Big, but Set Goals Goals should be FOCUSed Fit Ownership Concreteness Usefulness Stretch
