Squamous Cell Carcinoma Second most common form Scaly red patches, open sores, elevated growths or warts (may crust or bleed) Found on the ear, lower lip, face, bald scalp, neck, hands, arms, legs

Melanoma Most dangerous kind Kills one person every 50 minutes Second most common cancer in young adults between the ages of Often resembles moles Typically black or brown (can be skin-colored, pink, red, purple, blue, white)

ABCDEs to Melanoma  A = Asymmetry  B = Border  C = Color  D = Diameter  E = Evolving

Indoor Tanning Risk  55% of college students tan indoors and studies found more than 419,000 new skin cancer cases are discovered each year.  Teenage girls and young women make up most of the number of tanning bed customers.  Tanning indoors increases risk by 74%  4 times a year can increase risk by 11%  2.5x more likely to develop squamous cell carcinoma  1.5x more likely to develop basal cell carcinoma

Tanning  More than one million Americans use the tanning salon  71% of tanning salon customers are women  Laying in the tanning bed just one time increases your chances of developing melanoma by 20%  UV tanning devices is listed in Group 1 which is a list of most dangerous cancer causing substances.  Frequent tanners may receive up to 12 times more of the UVA dose compared to regular sun exposure.

Indoor Tanning Facts  Skin cancer cases due to indoor tanning are higher than lung cancer cases due to smoking.  Although indoor and outdoor tanning are both dangerous, indoor is more dangerous because the higher level of UV rays your body is receiving in a shorter amount of time.  Teens are more at risk because there experiencing at a higher growth rate and their cells are more prone to the damage of UV radiation. Dangers  Tanning beds have two types of UV rays, UVA and UVB. Both can damage the skin and lead to skin cancer.  Causes premature skin aging like spots and wrinkles.  Changes the texture of your skin.  Increases your risk of eye damage if you do not use proper eye ware.

Solutions  It is suggested to avoid all indoor tanning use  Limit outdoor tanning between the times of 10am to 4pm.  Use at least a SPF 15 sunscreen or higher if your outdoors longer.  Wear protective clothing such as a hat or sunglasses.  If you want a tan use a self tanning product instead.  5-10 minutes of sun, 2-3 times a week is enough to help your skin make Vitamin D.
