1)At what point does the flashback begin? Explain which words or phrases helped you identify this point. (answer): The flashback begins when the narrator compares her brother’s life now with their childhood. Textual Evidence for answer: “a hundred worlds” away (line 5) “I close my eyes, and...I see” (line 7) “...side by side, as clearly as if I were looking at a split TV screen” (line 8) Answer w/textual evidence: “I close my eyes and...see” shows that the narrator is remembering the past and comparing it “...side by side, as clearly as if I were looking at a split TV screen.”

The explanations (in pink) surround the quotes (in bold black). The flashback begins when the narrator, filled with pride, remembers and compares her brother’s life now with their childhood. “I close my eyes and...see” (line 7) shows that the narrator is remembering her childhood “hundreds of miles away” (line 5) and comparing it “...side by side, as clearly as if I were looking at a split TV screen” (line 8). The narrator’s pride is magnified by the success her brother has achieved over this long span of time.
