Welcome all to Week 9 Seminar! This week, we will discuss how behavior analysts, substance abuse counselors, and child development specialists use research collection methods in their jobs.

Interview: Used to collect in-depth information from individuals one at a time to be used to design specific programs for that person or for those who are similar (see Unit 4 Discussion Activity).

Describe how observation and interview methods of collecting information could be used together to collect more exact information than if used separately.

Interview: Used to collect in-depth information from individuals one at a time to be used to design specific programs for that person or for those who are similar... …How can you help to keep bias out of an interview?

Conducting an Experiment: Experiment: To conduct an experiment, two or more groups of something are compared to each other. One group, the control group, is not changed in any way during the experiment. The experimental group is changed in some way (see Unit 7 Discussion Activity).

How might a substance abuse counselor use research collection methods to gather information about clients?

Experiment: To conduct an experiment, two or more groups of something are compared to each other. One group, the control group, is not changed in any way during the experiment. The experimental group is changed in some way. What are some phenomenon we are likely to conduct experiments on?

Survey: To gather information about many people's thoughts or opinions, we create a list of questions to be asked of many people. The same questions in the same order are asked of everyone who participates. All responses are added together to provide information about public opinion or to learn about patterns of behaviors (see Unit 3 Discussion Activity).

Sleep Habits: What kind of information might a child development specialist ask on a survey if trying to learn more about children's sleep habits?

Survey: To gather information about many people's thoughts or opinions, we create a list of questions to be asked of many people. The same questions in the same order are asked of everyone who participates. All responses are added together to provide information about public opinion or to learn about patterns of behaviors. Why are surveys useful if they are not as accurate as experiments?

Observation: Researchers sometimes watch people in their natural environments and keep score of certain behaviors they see. This is used to form ideas about typical human behaviors in certain situations or environments (see Unit 2 Discussion Activity). What cautions are needed when observing people in their natural environment?

What types of problems can occur from faulty experimentation?

What issues might occur that would make you conduct an experiment as opposed to a survey? Why?

If it were possible to devise an experiment to discover anything you wanted to know about Psychology; what would you want to find out?

Brainstorm : What is the best method of discovering the solution to a problem a client is suffering from? What are some of the things you could do in advance to prepare to help them?

Of all of the ways, processes, and methods of research collection methods stated so far which do you think you need to master to help in your career?

If you have any questions now or later please do not hesitate to ask. Questions?
