Heresy Before going further, we need to introduce a vocabulary word: heresy Comp Book page 83 Title it: Goal # 8 and 9 - Heresy and the Inquisition

Top of Comp book page 83 Heresy What is it? What is it not? Additional descriptions Heretics = Religious ideas that oppose church teaching The church’s belief Accepted teaching Popular among church leaders People’s opinions that are different than church beliefs People whose ideas are heresy

Do not look at your card! Place your card on your forehead so that everyone else can see your card. Greet all Diamonds, Spades, and Clubs with a smile, handshake, high five, or fist bump. DO NOT ASSOCIATE IN ANY WAY WITH HEARTS.

The Inquisition How did it feel to be different? Today’s topic is about being different. Read the handout: –“The Rise of Portugal and Spain” –“The Spanish Inquisition” –“Jews face discrimination” After the Reconquista, the monarchs (King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella) desired a totally Christian Kingdom. They required all Jews to convert to Christianity and made it illegal to practice Islam.

The Inquisition To ensure that only Christianity was practiced, the Inquisition began. Inquisition – (what is the root word?) –Inquire (means – to question) ***The Spanish Inquisition = an organization of priests that looked for and punished anyone in Spain who secretly practiced their old religion.*** ***How was this possible?*** –Jews and Muslims were the minority (a small group)

Conclusion On the piece of paper, please explain how the activity related to the Spanish Inquisition.
