REMEMBER THE FOLLOWING: If the word AND is included, it means BOTH! You need to create a list and circle the items in both. TOP number – only count those circled in both. BOTTOM number – the number of options there are. For example – 6 sides on a dice / bottom # is 6! If the word OR is included, it means ANYTHING from either list / DON”T count something TWICE! TOP number – count ANTHING in either list; be careful not to count things TWICE! BOTTOM number - the number of options there are. For example – 6 sides on a dice / bottom # is 6!

DIFFERENT WAYS TO WRITE RATIOS! KNOW HOW TO FIGURE THE FOLLOWING: CAN YOU write the probability for the following if ONE fair dice is rolled: 1.) Roll a 4 2.) Roll a 2 or 3 3.) ODD and less than 3 4.) EVEN or greater than a 4 Once complete, ask Mrs. Camuto to check your answers!

PICKING A LETTER! If asked to choose a vowel from a given word, you will write a fraction! FOR EXAMPLE: Given the word CAPITOL – What is the probability of selecting a VOWEL? 3/7

KNOW HOW TO DRAW A TREE DIAGRAM! For LUNCH, you have the choice of: 4 types of sandwiches (tuna, ham, tomato, and peanut butter & jelly); 3 desserts (pie, ice cream and fruit) and 2 drinks (milk and soda). MAKE A TREE DIAGRAM BELOW!

KNOW THE COUNTING PRINCIPAL! USE THIS when you are given a number of different options, and ASKED how many different ways or choices you would have. FOR EXAMPLE: For camp, you pack 5 pairs of shorts, 7 t-shirts and 3 different baseball hats. How many different outfits could you wear?

KNOW HOW TO USE PROPORTIONS TO FIND THE “FRACTIONAL” PART OF A GIVEN BAG OR CONTAINER OF SOMETHING! You can set up a fraction / proportion and then cross- multiply to find out the number of the total that the fraction represents. FOR EXAMPLE: If given a bag of 30 marbles, how many is 3/6 of them? X = X = X = 15 YOU TRY! Given a bag of 50 marbles, 2/3 are yellow! How many marbles are yellow?

COMBINATIONS! IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER: In combinations, order DOES NOT matter! (Remember: C for “care less”!) FOR EXAMPLE: There is a basket full of 7 different kinds of fruit. How many different ways could you pull out 3 pieces of fruit?

PERMUTATIONS! IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER: In combinations, order DOES matter! (Remember: P for “picky”!) FOR EXAMPLE: In band, there are 8 trumpet players. How many different ways could you pick who would play 1 st., 2 nd., and 3 rd. Chair?
