Presentation transcript:

Old Man and the Sea Project By: Madison Maher

Santiago Santiago acts as a mentor in Manolin’s life. He knows about fishing and as they fish together he shows tricks to the skill. He teaches Manolin the skills he acquired as a younger man about fishing and making that a living. Santiago wants the boy to be successful and tries to help him succeed even though he is unlucky. Some examples: “I know many tricks and I have resolution.” “You must cast the net and get fresh sardines…”

Manolin Loyal Retainer Throughout the story the boy is always protecting the old man by making him feel better. He would take care of him and believe in him when no one else did. The boy often shows qualities that the man showed through the story. He never gave up on the old man and that helped the old man a lot. Some examples: “May I get you sardines? I know where I can get four baits too.” “And the best fisherman is you.”

Mr. Miyagi Mentor The boy needs to learn to defend himself and so he teaches the boy all he knows. He tutors him in the art of karate and the boy learns a lot from him. Mr. Miyagi knows the craft himself and as the boy gets better he teaches more. He helps the boy face his problem in the end and the boy gains respect for him.

Daniel LaRusso When the boy moves to California he gets bullied from a guy at school. He then meets Mr. Miyagi and learns how to defend himself. The boy is a loyal retainer because he helps Mr. Miyagi to regain pride and purpose. As he learns the skill he also shows qualities of Mr. Miyagi.
