What are the three main parts of a paragraph? Topic sentence, supporting sentences, conclusion

How many main ideas are there in a paragraph? There is only one main idea in each paragraph.

What does it mean if you write an essay in chronological order? When your paper is written in order of when the events occurred.

What are the five steps of the writing process? Prewriting Organizing Drafting Revising Editing

What does a comma do? A comma is a punctuation mark that indicates a pause is needed in a sentence. Commas help to clarify meaning for the reader

A comma and a conjunction joins words, phrases, and clauses together in a sentence. Name three conjunctions. FAN BOYS Conjunctions –for –and –nor –but –or –yet –so

Tell me where the comma(s) go in the following sentence… My brother who lives across town plans to throw a party! My brother, who lives across town, plans to throw a party!

What is a comma splice? A comma splice is an error in which two independent clauses are joined by a comma.

The place that I would most like to see is the moon. Christine, who is my best friend, will meet me at the mall to do Christmas shopping. Name two situations where you capitalize a word. There can be many answers for this question.

What are the Characteristics of a successful summary? You must name three to receive the points you have wagered. Accurately communicates the author’s ideas Includes all of the author’s main points No supporting details No opinions or reactions Doesn’t alter the author’s meaning Uses your own words and writing style

What is the purpose of a title in a persuasive essay? Try to grab attention by –offering a provocative image –picking up on words or examples offered in the body or conclusion of the paper –asking a question Avoid titles that are too general or lack character

What is a proper noun? What is an easy way to identify them? Proper nouns name particular people, places, or things. They are usually words that are capitalized.

What does it mean to offer a counter-argument in a persuasive essay? when you revise your paper you are adding and changing the structure of the paper. Editing is the stage where you look for grammar and spelling errors and is the final stage in the writing process.

Which of the following sentences is a good thesis statement for a persuasive essay? Parents, often too busy to watch television shows with their families, can monitor their children’s viewing habits with the aid of the V-chip. To help parents monitor their children’s viewing habits, the V-chip should be a required feature for television sets sold in the U.S. This paper will describe a V-chip and examine the uses of the V-chip in American-made television sets.

Some thesis statements have coordinate or overlapping ideas. What does that mean? It means that there are two ideas in your thesis or topic sentence that are similar in meaning.

How many parts are there to a topic sentence? A topic sentence has two separate parts The first part is the topic which is the key word or phrase of the sentence. The second part is the direction or general word, which may be a conclusion, an opinion or a statement about the topic.

Write a parallel thesis statement on the board. There are many different answers for this question.

There are five basics of generating a thesis statement. Name at least two. –It focuses on a single main point or position about the topic. –It is neither too broad nor too narrow. –It is specific. –It is something that you can show, explain, or prove. –It is a forceful statement written in confident, firm language.

What is the purpose of an introduction? There are two main things. Get the readers attention and allows the reader to know what will be covered in the essay. Sets the tone for the essay Hook the audience

What does a conclusion accomplish? There are three things name two. Reemphasize your thesis Provide a feeling of closure Bring together all of the ideas in your essay in a reflective way looking back on each of your important ideas.
