Presentation transcript:

Community Mobilization (CM) is…  Essential in South Africa – where by her early 20s, a women has a 1 in 3 chance of being HIV infected.  A critical enabler for HIV programs?  Promising but underconceptualized  Key to increase testing, engagement in care, uptake of bio-medical interventions

CM Programming in 11 RCT villages “One Man Can” – engaging men to question traditional norms related to manhood and masculinity, including norms limiting male engagement in health care (men don’t go to the clinic). Cluster-randomized trial Intervention conducted in 11 villages (only data collection in 11 control villages) Included:  Two-day intensive workshops  Outreach activities - door-to-door campaigns, street soccer, murals, street theater, mini-workshops in taverns and bars, digital stories, photo voice  Leadership engagement  Local Community Action Teams (CATs) established in each intervention village - trained to carry out activities and workshops with mobilizers

CM increases self-reported HIV testing For every SD increase in CM score, the odds of reported HIV testing increased in intervention village participants (OR: 2.2, p=<.01) but not for control village participants (OR 1.2, p=.39).
