Short Story SUPER NOTE! This is a review unit. You should already know all of this stuff. If not, learn now and no one will ever know.

What are the characteristics of a short story? Simple, straightforward plot. Only characters that are necessary are included. Minor characters are also important. The first paragraph of the short story must capture the reader’s interest immediately. The climax of the short story is located at or near the end of the story.

What are the characteristics of a short story? Dialogue is used often to shorten the length of the story, to help characterization, and to add to the realism of the story. The short story focuses on ONE experience. There are few changes in the setting of the story.

What are the parts of a short story? Exposition (introduction) Rising Action (crises) Climax Falling Action Resolution

Introduces the character and setting In a short story, the plot moves quickly towards the denouement (conclusion). The complicating incidents or obstacles to resolve conflict. Point of highest tension. The End! All the loose are tied up (or not).

What are the terms that you should know? Plot: the storyline. Characterization: techniques by which a character’s traits are revealed or developed. What the character says, thinks, does, and what others say about him/her. Types of characters: round and flat Setting: where and when the story takes place.

Theme: an understanding about life which the writer wishes to share with the reader, perhaps a warning or an encouragement. Pathos: the ability of the author to make the reader sympathize or emotionally respond to a character. Protagonist: the main character Antagonist: the character in conflict with the main character.

Crisis: a problem that must be faced by the protagonist, providing a turning point in the story. Conflict: internal (man vs self) or external (man vs man/society/nature). Symbol: something that stands for or represents something else. Climax: the highest point of interest or emotional intensity in the story. Foreshadowing

Flashback: the author interrupts the story and goes back in time to reveal a past event. Foil: a character who offsets or contrasts with another character by his behaviour and qualities. Suspense Irony: verbal, situational, dramatic. Point of view: first person, third person limited, third person omniscient.

Diction: denotative (most literal meaning of the word), connotative (associated or implied meaning, different from literal) Dialect Types of endings: closed and open. Tone: author’s attitude towards subject matter. Mood: the feeling the reader has when reading the story.

Atmosphere: the surrounding air of the story. Satire: to poke fun at or ridicule something, often a social weakness. The purpose is to show its ridiculousness, so that it is changed. SUPER NOTE OVER!!!
