Literacy Focus Using Capital Letters

Rule 1! All sentences begin with a capital letter, even sentences that only consist of one word. This is my house. Are you going to school? Stop! Yesterday, when John woke up in the morning, he decided to eat breakfast before getting dressed to go to work in the city.

Rule 2! The proper name, the name of a specific person or thing, begins with a capital letter.  Carre’s Grammar School Jane Austen David Cameron Empire State Building

Rule 3! Titles of books, songs, stories, etc. must begin with a capital letter, but only the important words in that title must be capitalised. Winnie the Pooh The Merchant of Venice Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

The first word of a direct quotation must begin with a capital letter. Rule 4! (Nearly there) The first word of a direct quotation must begin with a capital letter. "Who made this mess?" Papa Bear cried. The prime minister said, "Ask not what your country can do for you." The teacher asked, "Can you answer this question?"

Always use capital ‘I’ when using the first person! And finally… Always use capital ‘I’ when using the first person! I am not happy. Am I the first person here? Tell me what I have to do.

Test yourself! Are these right or wrong? Pride And Prejudice Geography Department Romeo and Juliet Carre’s grammar school ‘Quick!’ ‘i don’t understand!’ The Good, the Bad and the Ugly’

Have you used full stops properly? Literacy Focus of the Term A common mistake people make is to join two sentences together with a comma instead of using a connective, full stop or semi-colon. This is called comma splicing. X My sister is allowed to stay up until 10pm, she is older than me. It is incorrect to use a comma here as both statements make sense on their own. They are both complete sentences. Instead of using a comma you should:  Use a full stop: My sister is allowed to stay up until 10pm. She is older than me.  Use a connective: My sister is allowed to stay up until 10pm as she is older than me.  Use a semi colon: My sister is allowed to stay up until 10pm; she is older than me. Full stops are needed to end a sentence that is a statement.
