Storage, LMIS and Inventory Management

SO………… Your forecasting is completed. Your procurement process is completed. And now you are waiting for the products to arrive.

DID YOU REMEMBER……… …..to ensure that the logistics system is in place to manage the products once they enter the country?

How will you control the quantities of products to ensure that there isn’t too much or too little at any storage facility or health facility?

What information will you collect? What decisions will your managers make with this information?

What forms/formats will you use to collect this information?

How frequently will products be ordered (routine re-supply)?

How frequently will products be distributed (from central warehouse to regional/district stores to facilities)?

What are existing storage conditions (central to facility level)? Can existing storage conditions ensure product integrity?

What happens to products that expire or are damaged?

How will products move from central warehouse to regional/district storage facilities to health centers (vehicles?; outsourcing?; pickup?)

Do you have sufficient human resources to manage products at every level? What training do the people who manage products at every level need?

Key Topics for the Day Storage LMIS Inventory Control All are part of inventory management!

DELIVER’s Logistics Cycle

Cross-Cutting Issues Fully supply or limited supply commodities Integrated Systems or Vertical Systems

Purpose of Storage Protect the quality of the product and its packaging throughout the supply chain. Make product available for distribution.

Example: Kaletra Capsules are stable and potent for 2 months when stored at 25ºC One day at being stored at 45ºC > capsules become soft, sticky and break apart when separated from each other. Abbott recommendation: do not dispense more than 30 days supply when in hot climates.

2 key decisions in LMIS What data to collect What format the LMIS should be

3 Essential Data Items Stock on Hand Rate of Consumption Losses/Adjustments

Purpose of Inventory Control System To maintain an appropriate stock level of all products, avoiding shortages and oversupply.

No Product, No Program!
