KEY DEFINITIONS Operating System: The main software program that controls computer processing, software application execution, and integration and operation of computer peripherals, devices, and hardware. Windows 7: An operating system released by Microsoft in Microsoft Windows Version 7 was preceded by Windows Vista and succeeded by Windows 8. OS X: An operating system developed by Apple Inc. to run on Mac computers. Linux: An open-source operating system that was designed using the UNIX operating system model.

KEY DEFINITIONS (CONTINUED) Android: An operating system designed to run on mobile and touchscreen devices. Desktop Application: Software programs designed to run on desktop or laptop computers. Popular desktop applications include the Microsoft Office applications. Start Menu: The location in the Microsoft Windows operating system where programs, system settings, files and folders, and devices can be quickly accessed. Taskbar: The bar at the bottom of the screen in the Microsoft Windows operating system. The taskbar contains the Start button, pinned application shortcuts, and the notification area.

KEY DEFINITIONS (CONTINUED) Control Panel: A Microsoft Windows operating system program used to perform various system-level tasks, including user account management, computer device management, and network administration. Pinned Application: A program that has been attached to a permanent location in either the Start menu or the Taskbar for easier access. Display Settings: Control Panel settings that affect the appearance of graphical elements on the monitor. Recycle Bin: A directory where deleted folders and files are temporarily stored. Items in the Recycle Bin can be either restored or permanently deleted. The Recycle Bin is accessed through an icon on the Windows desktop.

FUNCTIONS OF AN OPERATING SYSTEM Provides a platform for applications to run on Gives applications access to the system hardware Provides security features to protect data on the computer Protects information by organizing, storing, and ensuring data integrity Provides a user interface that lets you interact with the computing system (input and output)

CLASS DISCUSSION What is the difference between computer hardware and software? What is the purpose of an operating system? How can the Windows operating system be configured through Control Panel?

CLASS ACTIVITIES Log in to a computer running Windows and explore system settings: Open Control Panel Check the System settings and record the Windows edition, processor speed, and amount of installed memory (RAM) Open Device Manager and observe the list of hardware devices installed on the computer Search the Internet for a list of new operating system features offered by either Windows 8 or Windows 10.
