The Chittenden Locks By Malachi Espinola

How were the locks made? The founders of Seattle always dreamed of having a connection from Lake Union to Lake Washington to Puget Sound (P.S. later on). In 57 years their dream came true. First a lot of people tried making locks, but failed. After everyone tried, David Denny and a lot of other people completed them. They started in 1911 by knocking away the dirt between Lake Union and Lake Washington. (not yet P.S.) Then, on February the first concrete was poured! Next, on July 19, 1916 the waters leveled. Third, on October 12,1916, Lake Union’s locks were opened. Finally, on May 18, 1917 the locks were truly opened.

Why Why were the locks made? Why are they important to Seattle? The vision of Seattle was always to have a ship canal from Puget to Lake Washington to Lake Union. They wanted it for mills, canneries, and shipyard. Another reason just to help boats go from the lakes to Puget Sound. The locks are probably famous because David Denny helped make them

Problem One problem was that when people tried they always seemed to fail. Another was that it drained The Black River. Thirdly, it turned part of Lake Union into a dump. Fourth it lowered Lake Union twenty feet in level. Also…

When In 1860 Harvey Pike, trying to make locks, made a log canal. In 1869 they tried, and it kept going in 1871, and Finally, in 1911 they did it!

Where In Lake Union, Lake Washington, and Puget Sound.

Who There were many people who tried making locks. Harvey Pike tried, Government (no name. tried, Thomas Brents tried, but no one made it. Then came the Hiram-Chittenden group, from the Core of Engineers.They completed the locks.
