TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November JCOV 25 November 2004 Results for the plastic-fluorocarbon compatibility tests Status of hygrometric studies Budget proposal M. Battistin

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November ILK institute (Dresden) performed plastic-fluorocarbon compatibility studies on two different materials C3F8C3F8 Vespel SP1 Kel-F (PCTFE) °C; 20 bar Optical evaluation: for both materials no visible changes and no sediments have been founded Weight and dimension analysis… Analysis on fluid… Analysis on material…

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November Fluid analysis: for both materials Vespel SP1 airCO 2 OctafluorpentaneNot identified Kel-F (PCTFE) Impurities <0.01% C3F8C3F8

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November Specimen weight and dimension Vespel SP1 Sample number Before test After test after 30 60°C Weight differenc e [N][g] [%] Average =-0.10 After the test the specimens have lost about 0.1% of their weight. No differences in dimension have been detected.

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November Shore hardness and tensile test Vespel SP1 No differences in hardness have been detected before and after the test: 83 Shore D on all the specimens Before After After the test the average mechanical values were: σ m = 94.1 MPa - std. dev. = 2.0 MPa ε B = 12.9% - std dev. = 0.8% Before the test the average mechanical values were: σ m = 90.7 MPa - std. dev. = 4.1 MPa ε B = 12.5% - std dev. = 1.4%

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November Specimen weight and dimension After the test the specimens have gain about 0.027% of their weight. Dimension differences have been detected: - Length: -0.33% - Width: -0.33% - Thickness: +0.77% Kel-F (PCTFE) Sample number Before test After test after 30 60°C Weight differenc e [N][g] [%] Average =0.027

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November Shore hardness and tensile test Before the test the average mechanical values were: σ m = 49.9 MPa - std. dev. = 1.3 MPa ε B = 188.1% - std dev. = 47.7% No differences in hardness have been detected before and after the test: 78 Shore D on all the specimens Before After After the test the average mechanical values were: σ m = 54.3 MPa - std. dev. = 0.5 MPa ε B = 142.7% - std dev. = 45.2% Kel-F (PCTFE)

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November Conclusions: Vespel SP1 can be used for our valves seats On the test condition Vespel SP1 shows an EXCELLENT resistance against octafluorpropane (C 3 F 8 ) Kel-F (PCTFE)Vespel SP1 On the test condition shows a GOOD resistance against octafluorpropane (C 3 F 8 ) Detailed results can be found in EDMS document number

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November Humidity sensors characterization Marco Fossa (CERN PH-HC - INFN Genova - University of Genova) is developing the sensor characterization at Genova University. Marco will present the result of his study during next JCOV meeting (January 2005?) The aim of the study is to infer the response behavior of HMX sensors and to define a general procedure for humidity sensors characterization including the effects of  relative humidity;  temperature;  voltage supply;  interchangeability.

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November Sensors Tested Hygrometrix 2000 resistive sensors Benefits  low costs (if in die format)  reduced dimensions  radiation hard Concerns  fragile in use  low signal output 3mm

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November Experimental strategy Procedure Air volumes in contact with saturated salt solutions. Controlled bath temperature (±0.2°C) Humidity measurements by Chilled Mirror Hygrometer 27 sensors investigated Operating conditions Temperature range (-12 ~ 23°C) Humidity range (11 ~ 96%) Supply voltage range (1.2~2.2V)

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November Preliminary results: interchangeability ±35%

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November Preliminary results: response to Rh

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November Preliminary results: supply voltage effect

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November Preliminary results: overall Rh=85% Rh=50% Rh=15% T=20°C

TS-CV-Detector Cooling 25/11/2004M. Battistin - JCOV 25 November Conclusions ? It is still too early to have definitive assumptions. Marco Fossa will present the results in January 2005.
