Presentation transcript:

Recommendations for NSF Task AC-GEO, supplemented by members of the geoscience education community, to define what broader impacts are and how they will be evaluated Add “results of broader impacts activities” form to “results of prior support > compile into exemplars Profile successful projects on front page analogous to successful research projects

…for science research community NRC should host a workshop/retreat for intellectual leadership in geosciences to address the health of the geosciences community Generate an NRC report out of that workshop which will have bigger impact on research community

…for professional societies Do more of what they are already doing Streamline efforts –Annual Summit of E&O people, associated with another meeting –Strengthen communication across professional societies Student grants should include small grants for E&O efforts

…for universities Align tenure and promotion criteria with requirements of funding agencies Evaluate E&O needs/desires and create coherent, cost-effective strategies on a local (departmental/school) level

…for DLESE Provide E&O toolkits for researchers Focus on developing infrastructure and implementing ideas of core group of E&O leaders rather than driving the E&O efforts (“dissemination arm”)

Plan and products Core group of leaders from this meeting continue to meet over the next six months to –Flesh out logistics for NRC workshop –Plan first E&O Summit –Nucleus of network of people Wait to generate report from NRC rather than directly from this meeting –Informal document for internal use –But formal document CAN go to NSF
