HIGH SCHOOL

NETIQUETTE: THE CORRECT OR ACCEPTABLE WAY OF COMMUNICATING ON THE INTERNET Students are digital natives but they may not be aware of digital citizenship.

SOCIAL MEDIA  Communication between teens is done more and more through social media.  The idea of having an electronic copy of what they said or posted is a foreign concept to many of them. Colleges and employers may use social media to investigate applicants.

SOCIAL MEDIA RULES: DON’T BE A JERK  Don’t post unflattering or rude pictures of others  Don’t post something you wouldn’t say to someone in real life  Don’t be a cyber bully  Don’t post something private or personal  Don’t let emotion rule your posts  Don’t call names Would you do what you did on social media in front of your grandma?

S  Students may not use now but chances are they will at college or in future careers  Address the person you are ing respectfully  Use a concise subject line  Proofread before you send  ALL CAPS MEANS YOU ARE YELLING!  Never reply to a message when you are angry  Emoticons help clarify feelings

BLOGGING (EDMODO, SCHOOLWIRES)  Blogging is a part of educational practices, whether students respond to a class blog, create their own blog, or read a blog.  Proofread what you write  Read other posts before you post  Don’t attack or troll  Stay calm (anger is not your friend)  If in a public blog, do not use your full name  Understand your audience and respond accordingly
