2006 Leadership Conference – Tempe, Arizona Changing of the Guard.

AC FA 2006 Leadership Conference – Tempe, Arizona Alumni.Control.Freaks.Anonymous

2006 Leadership Conference – Tempe, Arizona Myths. Facts. Now that we created this attendance policy, we will never have an attendance problem again. Your effort did not go to waste. You learned how to write policy and it was effective among your brothers. Sometimes chapters create identities based on happenstance. What is your real identity? We hold our initiation in right before graduation. It’s part of who we are. The new actives eliminated our well- planned attendance policy. All of our effort went to waste. A solution devised by one class may not always be the answer. The Active’s new fundraising plan will never work. Maybe it will. Just because you tried it once, doesn’t mean it won’t work a second time, with different people.

2006 Leadership Conference – Tempe, Arizona Myths. Facts. The Actives have little respect for what my class accomplished. The current actives have great and profound respect for you, and what you accomplished. Now they want their turn to prove they can accomplish as much as you. We’ve Always Done it that way. That probably isn’t true. Talk to older alumni and see how they did things. Even So, just because you always did something one way, doesn’t mean it will always work.

Leadership Conference – Tempe, Arizona Embrace Change. However, any organization that does not evolve with its members will wither and grow obsolete. True: Tradition is important to fraternity Times Change, and therefore the fraternity may change. A tradition, or solution that once thrived may now be holding the chapter back.

Leadership Conference – Tempe, Arizona Boundaries. (AKA – what would Dr. Phil do?) The Ritual belongs to the chapter. Let the actives lead. The Chapter and the Alumni Association are two separate organizations. When attending chapter meetings, be polite. You are a guest, not a member.

Leadership Conference – Tempe, Arizona Know When to Step In. The chapter is disregarding their Risk Management Plan. The Chapter is disregarding the Anti-Hazing Policy The Chapter has specifically requested your assistance. Problems with Alcohol and Drugs The chapter has been faced with a legal issue. Liability, Sexual Harassment, Disagreement with the University.

Leadership Conference – Tempe, Arizona Know How to Step In. If possible, address a situation one-on-one with the brothers in question. Conflict Management Training. Avoid using chapter meetings as a forum to step in. Reassure your active brothers that the chapter’s success is your #1 priority.

Leadership Conference – Tempe, Arizona Know When to Butt Out. The chapter is restructuring its Pledging/ Education or Rush Program The chapter votes to do anything that does not conflict with the Risk Management Plan or Anti-Hazing Policy. The chapter is altering initiation, but is still adhering to the Anti-Hazing Policy The chapter is proposing to amend their Constitution and By-Laws.

Leadership Conference – Tempe, Arizona Look Ahead. For the Recent/Near-Graduate: Learn about the leadership opportunities available with the Alumni Association. Get excited about your future as an alumnus. For the Alumni Association Board: Strike a balance between programs focused on Actives and Alumni

Leadership Conference – Tempe, Arizona Prepare, Prepare, Prepare. Record how you do things for future generations, and Develop Educational Tools. Be a Role-Model for younger brothers. Keep a Policy and Procedure’s Manual. Solidify and Understand your chapter’s Constitution and By-Laws. Build, Maintain, and Solidify your understanding of your chapter’s Anti-Hazing Policy and Risk Management Plan

Leadership Conference – Tempe, Arizona Have Faith. The foundation of our brotherhood is stronger than you think. You survived being an active without causing any permanent damage – the current actives will survive too... And their successors… The Actives are the Trapeze Artists – the Alumni are the net.
