7MD1.4 Area of Parallelograms What you’ll learn: Find the area of parallelograms Remember a parallelogram is a quadrilateral with opposites sides parallel and opposite sides congruent. Congruent means equal or same
New Vocabulary Base: any side of the parallelogram base
New Vocabulary Height: the length of the segment perpendicular to the base with endpoints on opposite sides. ( This is “how tall” the parallelogram is.) height
Area The area of a parallelogram equals the product of its base and its height. A=b(h) A means Area B means base H means height Product is answer for multiply Important to know!!!
Find the Area The first thing that you need to do is write down the formula that you will be using. A=bh Remember this means Area equals base times the height
Find the Area Find the area of a parallelogram with base 15 cm and height 4 cm. A=bh A=15 x (4) (15 x 4) = 60 A= 60 square centimeters A= 60 cm 2 Remember that area is given in square units!
Find the Area A= bh A= 18(12) or 18 x 12 = 216 A= 216 m 2 Always label in units square. 18 m 12 m
Your Turn 1. b= 10 in h=5 in 2. b= 8 cm h= 10cm
Watch Out Be sure that the base and height are given in the same unit before you find the area. b= 4 cm h= 60 mm You need to use : b=4 cm and h= 6 cm or b= 40 mm and h= 60 mm
