1. I can explain the relationship between the perceived expectation and the potential outcome 2. I can defend self-disclosure choices to achieve a positive self-fulfilling prophecy

“Analyze and evaluate the effectiveness of positive intrapersonal communication.”

Recognize the impact of perception and self-disclosure on communication success.

The Communication Process & You

* Communication that occurs in one’s own mind; also called “self-talk”

process you use to assign meaning to data about yourself or the world around you * There are 3 perceptions…

Physical process of taking data through the senses

mental process of choosing which data/stimuli to focus on from all that are available to you at a given time (Ex: Gym) 1. Intensity – the more intense 2. Repetition – over & over 3. Uniqueness – new & unusual 4. Relevance – mirror our own interests

1. Values 2. Beliefs 3. Culture 4. Bias 5. Prejudice 6. Attitudes

THINK, PAIR, SHARE What were the first perceptions displayed by each of the communicators?

Perception Check: A question that helps you determine the accuracy and validity of your perceptions.

The view you have of yourself; formed from your beliefs and attitudes.

1. The Event (what you want to do) 2. The Behavior (what you do to get it) 3. The Outcome (what was the result)

1. With a partner, discuss and write personal examples of a positive self-fulfilling prophecy and a negative self-fulfilling prophecy. Be sure to include all 3 components. (Event, behavior, outcome) 2. The future you……where do you see yourself in 10 years. What do you have to do to make sure that happens? (Event, behavior, outcome)

Deliberate revelation of Personal information that is not readily apparent to others Ex: Counseling session, thoughts, feelings, aspirations, goals, failures, successes, fears, dreams, likes, dislikes, failures

The following is an example of self-disclosure…

 SELF TALK RELATES TO SELF HEALTH
