A lost city of gold in South America Not yet to be found legend Historians never give up to find it
Origin
Musica tribe: Two migrations (1270 BC & 800 ~ 500 BC) - conquered Cundinamarca and Boyacá areas of Colombia. Legend in “El Carnero” by Juan Rodriguez Freyle ritual for new king with gold dust & noble treasures
Take place before ascending the throne Lake Guatavita naked ~ covered with gold dust ~ decorated with precious stones (a birthday cake?) Center of the lake ~ bathe + stones into lake sacrifice to Musica’s god
Not a city The Gilded One synonym of the lost city of gold + places get rich quickly
1545 ~ Lázaro Fonte + Hernán Perez de Quesada drained Lake Guatavita (sacred lake to Musica) Gold alone the shore 1580 ~ Antonio de Sepúlveda again gold found
Real city Huge desire to uncover it Legends divert locations did so too ~ originated in Columbia All areas in Latin America
