Resources - Books Behavior Intervention Manual (BIM) Table of Contents arranges issues together (ie: emotional or physical well-being; listening; interpersonal relationships) Under each heading there is a specific problem Go to the page listed for goals, objectives, and interventions Pre-Referral Intervention Manual (PRIM) Organized the same way as the BIM However, focuses on academics as well Still has section on behaviour that is very useful Created by the same publisher

Resources - Books Outrageous Behavior Modification by Barry T. Christian Very informally written Has blackline masters Has strategies and scenarios about ODD students The Kids’ Guide to Working Out Conflicts by Naomi Drew, M.A. Written for kids Has many scenarios applicable to middle- school kids Works through win-win problem solving Lost at School and The Explosive Child by Dr. Ross Greene are books that look at the child, rather than the classroom

Oppositional Defiance Disorder ODD Do: Listen to the student Use the student’s name Remove the audience Use humour Double your distance Minimize the discussion (it’s not time to teach!) Attempt distraction Walk away if necessary ODD Don’t: Place your hands on the student Raise your voice Threaten consequences Point your finger Crowd the student Try to “convince” Respond too quickly Use “put-downs” Use bribes Respond emotionally

Teflon Responses Thanks for noticing Thanks for sharing that That’s an interesting point I see Hmmm.... I’ll have to think about that I hear what you’re saying That’s really interesting I hate it when that happens Help me understand why this is so important to you Its ok to be mad. It’s not ok to say that.

On-Site Mediation Strategy Purpose: reinforce clear and consistent expectations for student behavior support for students who experience academic and/or behavioral problems provides direct classroom support with classroom management strategies

On-Site Mediation Strategy Steps to use On-Site Mediation: Teacher implements all classroom strategies in toolbox If teacher has exhausted all of their strategies i.e. seating changes, working with teaching partner etc., Call member of On-Site Mediation Team Situation #1- Member of team takes over the class, while teacher and student(s) come to resolution to conflict/issue Situation #2- Member will take student to Student Success Room or Student Services to do further problem solving, with specific focus being paid to Character Development and STAR!

“What”, “So What?”, “Now What?” Activity Each Group has received a case scenario of a possible classroom conflict. Read your scenario as a group and create a skit to show the “What”, “So What”, “Now What” strategy for dealing with conflict. The scenario that is bolded in your handout is the one we would like you to use for your skit.

Supporting Our Spec. Ed Students With Bullying Because it can be easy for kids to see each other as “different,” sometimes your ISSP students become bullying targets This requires you to intervene immediately and put a stop to the behaviour How? Put them in the target’s shoes Role play Discussion of motivation Recognition of similarities and differences Contract
