Minerals What do you think some minerals may be used for? What makes some minerals more valuable than others?

Properties of Gems Gems are beautiful, rare, highly prized materials that can be worn in jewelry. They are clearer, brighter, or more colorful than common samples of minerals. Sometimes a gems crystal structure allows it to be cut and polished to a higher quality than a non-gem mineral. Example: Amethyst versus quartz

Important Gems Cullinan diamond – The world’s largest uncut diamond ever. Blue Hope Diamond

Useful Gems Diamonds – cut services Rubies - used to produces different types of laser light Quarts crystals - used in electronics and time pieces

Useful elements in a Mineral Ore – deposit in which a mineral exists in large enough amounts to be mined at a profit. Example:Magnetite
