Assignment Compose a black and white design using the grid system. Your design will include: 2. Two or more photographs One straight photo. One using transparency. heading or title. subheadings or lead-in phrases. 200 to 300 word text box. 3. a repeating letter motif. 1. text data in order of hierarchy.

Definition: The grid system is a way of organizing content on a page, using any combination of margins, guides, rows and columns. It is commonly seen in newspaper and magazine layout with columns of text and images.

Newspaper grids are generally rather predictable and boring; however, they are very effective for organizing material. The grid system is perhaps one of the most effective ways to organize visual material. The aligning of objects creates unity and balance.

Magazines are more open to creative page layouts.

Here is a student example of our assignment. Notice how they used a very formal grid to create a more unusual composition. Also notice how they used the smaller photos to create a gestalt for the letter “E”.

Here is another student example. Notice how the grid rotates on a diagonal to create a more dynamic composition.

Here is another student example. Notice how the photograph overlaps into the header.

When combining text and photographs keep your text readable. Here the text and photograph conflict.Despite changes they still conflict. Here the the text and photograph are working better. Here the picture was altered to provide more contrast for the text.

Keep your text readable. Common wisdom developed over centuries is that serifs, the little horizontal lines at the tops and bottoms of characters, makes large bodies of text easier to read. That is why nearly all books, magazines, and newspapers use a serif font such as Times New Roman or Bookman. Script fonts are to busy for text body. All caps are hard to read.Special fonts are more for headers.

Using white space.
