OBJECTIVES What should you be able to do at the end of class? Describe the basic organization of the periodic table of elements. Use the periodic table to determine the number of electron shells and valence electrons of an element.

The Periodic Table of Elements is a way of organizing the elements in relation to each other so it is easy to find elements that have similar properties. It allows scientists to make predictions and explain events. What is the Periodic Table of Elements? Why is that helpful?

Here is a “periodic” table. What is it?

The columns are called “GROUPS” or families. What is represented by the groups on this periodic table? DAYS

The rows are “PERIODS”. What information is in the horizontal periods? WEEKS

Certain information is missing. How would you find the missing data? Group 5 Period 3 ??

Periods Each row is called a “period” The elements in each period have the same number of electron shells Hint: A period comes at the end of a sentence--a horizontal line.

Groups Each column is called a “group” or family. Each element in a group has the same number of electrons in its outer orbital, also known as its outer shell. Except for He, it has 2 electrons The electrons in the outer shell are called “valence electrons.” Hint: Your Family tree is vertical.

Location of Most Nonmetals

Transition Metals Transition Metals have slightly different rules for shells and valence electrons. This is something you will learn about in High School Chemistry. For now, assume they each have two valence electrons.

Use the periodic table.

Determine the number of shells and the number of valence electrons for:

Determine the number of shells and the number of valence electrons for:

Helium is the exception in Group 18. Since it has just one shell, that shell can only fit 2 electrons instead of 8. It is in this group because all the elements have a full outer shell.

Review: How is the Periodic Table of Elements organized? How can I tell how many electron shells an element has? How can I tell how many valence electrons an element has?

Questions of the day… How are the elements arranged in the Periodic Table of Elements? Column A & B: In rows called periods and columns called groups or families Column C: The elements in a row or period have the same number of what? Electron shells Column D: The elements in a column or family (group) have the same number of what? Valence electrons (electrons in the outer shell) Column E & F: Find the element Al (13) and tell how many electron shells and valence electrons it has. Know why. Aluminum has 3 electron shells and 3 valence electrons.

In Class Project Expectations Volume 1 voices Do not leave you seat without permission There can only be one person at a supply station at a time If you are kicked out you receive a zero We have limited supplies so you only get 2 letters and 4 pipe cleaners THIS IS DUE AT THE END OF CLASS (great opportunity for grades)

1)In UPPER LEFT corner you MUST put the element SYMBOL 2)In UPPER RIGHT corner you MUST put the ATOMIC NUMBER 3)In the MIDDLE BELOW #1 and #2 put the ELEMENT NAME 4)Below that name you must put the ATOMIC MASS 5)#1-#4 MUST BE VISIBLE then you need to add 3 EXAMPLES of what that element can be found in or characteristics of the element. 6)This is due at end of class for a project (worth 20 points) grade! No excuses! Al 13 Aluminum Criteria for Success:
