Behavior RTI An Introduction

Behavior RTI A General Education Initiative Mandated in the district framework Intended to teach prosocial behaviors Increasing behavioral support for students The responsibility of the SPED teacher Optional Intended as a punitive process for the child “The first step to an IEP for behavior” IS… IS NOT…

A General Education Initiative Just because a child is struggling with behavior does not make the child “special needs”, nor does that mean the responsibility of addressing the behavior falls to the Special Education Teacher. Follows the same logic as the academic RTI model, that lack of instruction (even in prosocial behaviors) does not meet the requirement for referral for SPED

Mandated in District Framework

To Teach Prosocial Behaviors Through direct instruction of social skills Second Step 4 th R Mind Up Modeling Practice

Increasing Behavioral Supports Tier I Tier II Tier III

The Elephant in the Room Under Special Education law, there is no such thing as an IEP for behavior – only Emotional Disability. Placing a child on an IEP will not change behavior. You don’t have to have an IEP to provide support!

So…How Does it Work?

Prevention District-Wide School-wide Classroom

Intervention Individual Classroom Teachers (Tier I) Teachers with colleagues & coaches (Tier II) Teachers with Specialists (Tier III)
