NOUN Definition- a word that names a person, place, thing, or idea Color - yellow Color - yellow Examples – Mrs. Nye, girls, school, Willowbrook Mall, computer….. Can be singular, plural, common, or proper

PRONOUN Definition- a word that takes place of a noun Color- also yellow Color- also yellow Examples – he, she, it, we, us, they….

VERB Definition- an action or state of being word Color Color - orange Examples- run, reads, think, talking, jumped, am, is, are…. Can be past, present, or future tense (also includes helping verbs)

COMPLETE SENTENCES MUST HAVE A: subject (noun or pronoun) *Who or what the sentence is about predicate (verb) *What the subject is doing

ADJECTIVE Definition- a word that describes or modifies a noun Color - blue Examples- blue, thirteen, this, funny, big….. Articles, or noun markers, are special kinds of adjectives (red)

ADVERB Definition- a word that modifies a verb, adjective, or other adverb Answers how, when, where, or why Color - purple Color - purple Examples – slowly, quickly, here, now, very, well…..

CONJUNCTION Definition – a word that connects words, phrases, or sentences together Color - brown Color - brown Examples – and, or, but We will study both coordinating and subordinating conjunctions this year

PREPOSITION Definition – a word that shows relation between a noun and other words in the sentence Color - green Color - green Examples – with, in, on, around, under, beside….. Remember Preppie the squirrel (**** the tree)

INTERJECTION Definition – a word that expresses strong feeling or emotion Color - white Color - white Examples – Oh! Wow! Hooray! Good grief! Oh, no!….
