* History is how we record time. * History is more than just facts, dates and historical figures. * History is a great unfinished story that we are all writing together throughout time.

How do we record time? When we want to show that passage of time it is written a lot of ways: B.C. = Before Christ B.C.E = Before Common Era *With these you count backwards toward the modern age.* For instance 200 B.C or B.C.E comes before 20 B.C. or B.C.E. The last year of B.C or B.C.E is year one. A.D. (Anno Domini) = The year of our lord. C.E. = Common Era. *With these you count forward.*

On page 8 in your textbook it has a part of the letter that Pliny the Younger wrote to his Uncle Tacitus. Will three people please volunteer to read a section of this letter aloud for us? 1 2 3

Historians are the people responsible for recording time. Their work brings up insight on who we were, who we are and where we might be going. 1)Why do you believe Pliny the Younger might have been qualified to be a historian? 2)Do you believe his views on government might have made Tacitcus opinion about this history of Rome biased? Why or why not?

Picture from page 8 of your textbook. The ash and rocks from the volcanic eruption buried the town of Pompeii and preserved it much as it was in 79 AD.

In your notes write a quick write response to this question. 1)If two historical sources don't agree; what is a way historians can decide which one is accurate? 2)Why would Pompeii be a good place for historians to study life in ancient Rome?

In your notes create your own personal time line: 1) First date is your first day of summer. 2) Last date is the first day of this school year. 3) Pick no less than six special days and record them on your time line. Ask yourself why did you pick those dates. Why were the important to you? 4) Add details to those dates.
