St. Augustine, Florida “Nation’s Oldest City”

St. Augustine is located on the Atlantic Coast of Florida, just an hour south of Jacksonville.

Pedro Menendez de Aviles officially claimed St. Augustine as a Spanish possession on September 8, St. Augustine was the first successful Spanish colony in Florida.

In 1586, Sir Francis Drake, an English sailor, burned the town of St. Augustine to the ground. The fort was saved, and the colony was rebuilt. In 1598, fire destroyed the town again. Once again, St. Augustine was rebuilt.

It was built over 200 years ago using red cedar, cypress, wooden pegs, and handmade nails. The Oldest Wooden School House in the United States

Castillo de San Marcos The Castle of St. Mark was built in 1672 and took more than 30 years to complete. The Spanish king agreed to build the new fort made of stone to protect them from the English.

The fort’s walls are more than 10 feet thick and are made of coquina, a soft white limestone. It has lookout towers, wall openings for cannons, and apartments for soldiers. The fort is large enough to hold 1,500 people.
