Objective Students will be able to understand life during the Paleolithic Age

May I have a volunteer to read the following aloud? Was eastern Africa the home of the earliest humans? Many scientists believe that is where the first group of human like beings lived. Some early human skeletons found in Africa are over six million years old. Scientists estimate that this skull may be more than 3.2 million years old. Fossils like this one tell us a lot about early humans. Some early people may have begun moving from Africa to other regions about 1.8 million years ago. Over a period of time humans were found in Europe and as far away as China. Everywhere early humans went, they left clues about their lives. By studying these clues, scientists can tell us about the past. (Turn and talk to discuss the main idea of this passage)

Moving forward, we are going to begin examining the lifestyles of the very first peoples in the Eastern Hemisphere!!!

Paleolithic Age *The Paleolithic Age began about 2.5 million years ago!!! *The Paleolithic age was also known as the stone age. *Paleolithic means “old stone” Hypothesize why this period of time might have been called the stone age (Turn and talk)

Nomads

Nomads are a group of people who move from place to place in order to survive. People moved during the Paleolithic age in order to find food. Wherever the animals went, people followed.

Guided Practice You will be given a reading excerpt detailing how the fist people survived the Paleolithic age. As a class we will read the passage and highlight what we believe the main idea and supporting details are.

Independent Practice Please answer the following based upon the reading. All answers can be found in the text.  Why are the Paleolithic people called “Hunter Gatherers?  What did they hunt?  What did the gather?  Did everybody hunt equally?

Group Work The methods Paleolithic people used to hunt and gather were a part of their culture, and that technology (tools and methods used to complete performance tasks) were first invented by the Paleolithic People. Each group will be given one tool or weapon to work on. They must identify what they believe the tool is, and hypothesize how the Paleolithic people utilized this tool. Group 1-Identify and describe what fish hooks were used for Group 2- Identify and describe what spears were used for. Group 3-Identify and describe what bow and arrows were used for. Group 4-Identify and describe what pottery was used for.

Closure Lets come together to have a closing discussion on the types of weapons and tools that were used Think about how these objects are still relevant in the world today.”
