MAKING A POSITIVE DIFFERENCE IN EQAO CLASSROOM RESULTS CREATING RUBRICS WITH YOUR STUDENTS Dr. Wynne Blair Nipissing University Faculty of Education

Why do we create rubrics with the children? Students need to have work that is meaningful to them Students need to know and understand howhow to do their work why why they are doing it and howhow their work will be evaluated.

Why do we create rubrics with the children? WhenWhen the teacher teacher is the only one who knows the criteria for marking, the students students do not have enough information to plan their approach to assessment to the best of their ability.

Creating the Rubrics Questions to ask yourself: “When do we make them?” “What are we going to include on the rubric?” “How am I going to motivate the children to stay on task as we create the rubric?”

“When do we make them?” when the children have enough knowledge to help youwhen the children have enough knowledge to help you If you make them too soon, they don’t understand the concepts. in their own wordsIf you wait until they have some understanding, they can create the rubric in their own words with just a little guidance.

“What am I going to include on the rubric?” Include all of the categories that you have included on your teacher rubric. In that way, the children have complete information to guide their performance.

“How am I going to motivate the children to stay on task as we create the rubric?” The better students stay on task because they want to know how to record their best work and do well. The weaker students may need some form of extrinsic motivation.

Bonus Parents usually love the child produced rubrics because they are free of “eduspeak” so they are parent friendly as well.Parents usually love the child produced rubrics because they are free of “eduspeak” so they are parent friendly as well.
