Seasons. What Causes Seasons? Seasons are caused by the tilt of the earth’s axis as it moves around the sun. Seasons happen because the Earth is tilted.
Earth’s Seasons. Rotation 1.The imaginary line that passes through Earth’s center and the North and South poles is called Earth’s axis. 2.Earth spinning.
Why do we have day and night?. Earth’s rotation  The Earth rotates on its axis (imaginary vertical line around which Earth spins) every 23 hours & 56.
Earth/Sun Relationship. Temperature The condition of the atmosphere at a given place and time.
What causes seasons? The tilt of the Earth on its axis The 23.5° tilt is caused by the interaction between the Moon and the Earth.

Earth-Sun Relationships (How does one affect the other?) Weather and Climate ©2012, TESCCC

Discuss with your neighbor What is today’s temperature? Is temperature considered climate or weather? Why? There are regions in Texas that rarely receive any rainfall. Is this statement relevant to climate or weather? Why? Does the temperature in our city remain constant throughout the year? Why? Why not? ©2012, TESCCC

Weather vs. Climate Weather Conditions of the atmosphere in one place during a limited time. Climate Weather patterns that an area typically experiences over a long period of time. ©2012, TESCCC

Weather and Climate are MOST IMPACTED by the SUN!!!!!! ©2012, TESCCC

What causes the seasons? SKU SKU We are going to explore in more detail how these physical systems, such as climate and weather, affect patterns in the physical environment. ©2012, TESCCC

Check For Understanding What causes the seasons? What are hemispheres? When the northern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun what season is it in the southern hemisphere? When it is fall in the northern hemisphere what season is it in the southern hemisphere? Why are the hemispheres warmer when tilted towards the sun? ©2012, TESCCC

Earth’s Tilt Tilt: the angle of incline of the Earth’s axis affects the temperature of a place. Revolution: the Earth’s trip around the sun (one year) Rotation: the Earth completely rotates on its axis every 24 hours. (alternating between night and day) ©2012, TESCCC

Earth’s Tilt Equinox: when the Sun’s rays fall directly on the equator, day and night time hours are almost equal (Spring and Fall) Solstice: One of two days (June 21 and December 22) on which the Sun’s rays strike directly on the Tropic of Cancer or the Tropic of Capricorn, marking the beginning of summer and winter. Direct rays: When a hemisphere is tilted toward the sun, the direct rays of the sun or angle of incidence is higher and it is summer in that hemisphere. Indirect rays: When a hemisphere is tilted away from the sun, the direct rays of the sun or angle of incidence is lower and it is winter in that hemisphere. ©2012, TESCCC

Check for Understanding A _________ takes one day A _________ takes one year The equator receives more _________ rays than the rest of the earth The Arctic circle receives more _______ rays ©2012, TESCCC

DRAW IN YOUR JOURNAL 5 Major Circles of Latitude ©2012, TESCCC

Check for Understanding When would it be darkest at the ARCTIC circle? (time of year) When would it be darkest at the Antarctic Circle? (time of year) ©2012, TESCCC
