Investigation into developing stand- alone Location Based services (LBS) Nkululeko Gojela g01g2471
Background “…services that integrate a mobile devices location or position with other information so as to provide added value to the user” Schiller and Viosard
Classes of LBS Identified 2 classes of LBSes Class 1 – LBS that are dependent on an aggregation infrastructure Class 2 – those that are independent of an aggregation infrastructure
Class 1 Dependent on an aggregation infrastructure LocationContentProvider(AggregationPoint) LocationInformationProvider (GPS, Cellphone Tower, Wifi Triangulation) LBS
Class 2 – those that are independent of an aggregation infrastructure LBS LocationInformationProvider (GPS, Cellphone Tower, Wifi Triangulation) LBS
The goal of this research is to investigate the development of the second class of services
Mobile application levels 2 levels on the developing and running mobile devices – sim card level of the phone independent of the handset's capabilities – handset level where they are dependent on the capabilites of the handsets
Purpose of research Explore the best location of LBS on the mobile devices – To ensure maximum portability Establish how the source of the location information partition this class of LBS
Challenges The challenge of this research would be develop a service(s) that is portable across different platforms. Coordinate accuracy To create a service useful not only to confined to one use – Different events at different locations
Tools and Platforms SIM Application Toolkit technology – set of commands which define how the card should interact with the outside world and extends the communication protocol between the card and the handset Windows Mobile Symbian OS Java Card Technology
