Reporting Results When there are several variables, give descriptive statistics in a table: – Means – Standard Deviations Tables go before figures at the end. Refer to it in text (e.g., see Table 1). When statistical tests are uncomplicated (simple t- tests) or there are only a few, report them in text. When statistical tests are complex (ANOVA) or there are many tests, report them in a table.

Sample ANOVA Results in Text “A significant main effect for the type of stimulus (congruent vs noncongruent) was found, F(1,15)=12.00, p=.003. No other significant main effects were found and no significant interactions were found.” If gender was significant, then say: – “Response times also varied significantly by gender (male, female), F(1,15)=1.25, p=.28.”

Interpreting Your Results A statistical test must be performed for each of your hypotheses (these are your predictions from the Introduction section). After presenting descriptive statistics and the results of your hypothesis tests, interpret your findings in a few sentences: – “Only congruence between color of ink and word meaning affected response times, not gender or the location of the stimulus.”

Include a Figure Plot your results using SPSS or Excel. Cut and paste the figure into your paper. Figures appear at the end of the report. – Figure captions go on a single sheet separate from the figures themselves. – Lightly write the figure number on the back of the page, together with your short title. Refer to the figure in text (e.g., See Figure 1).

Samples of Stimuli It is often a good idea to present a figure or table showing your stimuli: – Pictures and visual information goes in a figure. – Word lists, stories, sample instructions may be better presented in a table or, if lengthy, in an appendix. Diagrams can be used to show your experimental set up or procedures, if complex. Include this as a figure.
