About This Class We will present one leadership topic or quality of a leader per class We will assign homework (do not worry, it is not a lot). Just small reflections on upcoming topics. We will not grade or judge the homework in any way. We only need your opinion. (Guess what, there will be a reward involved) This class will have a lot of discussions, instead of us teaching the whole time. We will be presenting some information about the current topic at the beginning of each class. Every class will include public speaking. Be prepared!

Leadership: An Introduction What are the good qualities of a leader? What is a leader? How can I be an effective leader? Why should I become a leader? How is a leader different from a follower and what makes that difference?

Qualities of a Leader Here are some qualities of a good leader: Decision Making Simplified Articulation Effective Public Speaking Always Calm Strategic Thinking Conflict Resolution Building trust Motivating Others Being Creative/Having a vision Being Productive

What is a Leader? A leader is someone who may or may not be in a position of authority, but can get people to do things without forcing them. Leaders express all of the leadership qualities stated in the slide above and they always keep an open mind. For example, suppose a group of students are doing a group project and nobody is willing to step up and take charge of the project. A leader, in this scenario, would be the person who takes charge and gets the project done. The leader will LEAD the group in order to complete the project.

How Can I Become an Effective Leader? Becoming an effective leader is not as difficult as it may seem. People of all ages, shapes and sizes can become a leader. Public speaking is one of the most important ways to become an effective leader. It allows a leader to easily motivate and work with his/her followers. Without effective public speaking, a leader can not effectively get his/her ideas across to everyone. Leaders are brave and courageous. They are not afraid of any challenge no matter the difficult. “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” ~ John C. Maxwell

Why Should I Become a Leader? A leader is someone who does things that normal followers do not want to do. Leaders take initiative and drive all of their followers along with themselves to success. By us becoming leaders, we will earn respect and we will help others achieve success. Leaders are the MLK jrs. and Mahatma Gandhis of the world. Leaders are the people who will change our world for the better. Without powerful leaders in our history, we wouldn’t be as developed as we are today. How is a Leader Different From a Follower? As you all know: A leader is someone who always takes charge (even in adverse situations) and is never afraid to express his/her feelings and thoughts. A follower is someone who looks up to a leader for motivation. A follower is also someone who is afraid to step up and to express their thoughts even if their ideas are brilliant. We all know which one is best! “I am not afraid of an army of lions led by a sheep; I am afraid of an army of sheep led by a lion.” ~ Alexander the Great
