A force is a push or pull on an object. Apply a force on any object in the room

 A force is any PUSH or PULL on an object  Forces can come from any DIRECTION (up, down, right, left, diagonal)  Force is measured in NEWTONS (N)  Forces act on ALL objects  Forces are not always VISIBLE

 There are usually one or more forces acting on an object. The combination of these forces is called the NET FORCE  Same direction › the object will move in the direction that BOTH forces are moving  Different direction › The object will move in the direction that the LARGER force is moving

 When your forces are unequal, the net force will be the difference between the forces  If the forces are equal, the net force would be 0 Newtons and the object would NOT move

 2 Types of forces commonly mentioned are: › Friction › Gravity  Friction is where your force resists motion between two surfaces of the objects that are in contact.  If friction is present, the moving object will STOP moving or SLOW DOWN

 KINETIC FRICTION › Which is friction between moving surfaces. Ex. A book being pushed across a table top  STATIC FRICTION › Which is friction that prevents an object from even moving. Ex. A book at rest on a table top.

 You can ADD or REMOVE friction by adding or removing substances from the situation  Gravity is a force of attraction that is related to the mass of an object. Weight is a measurement of gravity on an object

 Gravity can increase as mass increases. So if you have a cat versus an elephant, which one will have more gravity acting on it? Because it has more mass

 Balanced means: › Total amount of force is equal  Unbalanced means: › Total amount of force is unequal  NET FORCE means: › Total sum of force on an object › Measured in Newtons still (btw 1 Newton= pound)

 Pick a sport and draw a picture showing someone participating in it on the back of your paper. (Drawings should be neat and colorful)  Identify where forces are acting in the picture. Draw arrows to indicate where the force is coming from and where they are going  Make bullets to answer the following questions: › Why are forces important in the sport you chose? › Give 2 examples of what would happen in your picture/sport if these forces weren’t present.
