HFT 2401 Hospitality Financial Accounting Fall 2008 Course Overview

Course Description  Hospitality Industry Financial Accounting will provide the basic knowledge of financial accounting systems in a hospitality environment

Course Objectives  A basic understanding of accounting principles  An understanding of the development of financial accounting systems  An understanding of the preparation of accounting transactions, adjusting entries, the balance sheet, the income statement, and accounting ledgers

Course Objectives  An understanding of the various forms of business organizations and basic accounting for each  Understanding the concepts of cash accounting, receivables and payables accounting, inventory accounting, FF&E accounting and payroll accounting  Practice group analysis and presentation skills

Topics to be Covered  Part I  Introduction to Accounting  Accounting for Business Transactions –Accounting Principles  Accounting Adjustments  Completing the Accounting Cycle  Subsidiary Ledgers and Special Journals

Topics to be Covered  Part II  The Income Statement  The Balance Sheet  Financial Statement Analysis and Interpretation

Topics to be Covered  Part III  Cash and Internal Controls  Receivables and Payables  Inventories & Cost Calculations  Current Liabilities and Payroll  Property Plant and Other Assets –(Depreciation)  Additional Topics as Time Allows

Grading Criteria  A 90% to 100%  B 80% to 89%  C 70% to 79 %  D 60% to 69%  F 0% to 59% The plus / minus system is not is use Grades will be given out in person only.

Group Presentations  Attendance is mandatory for all presentations  All members of the group must participate in the presentation  Group size is to be limited to 2 participants
