Follow Jesus When hanging from the cross as a victim of the most heinous form of violence, persecution, and terrorism, Jesus cried out, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.” His very killers had been created by Him, in the image of the triune God, and counted worthy of Him paying the ultimate price for their salvation. So, naturally, he looked upon them with compassion, love, mercy and grace. HE CALLS US TO DO THE SAME!

Acts 20:17-38 From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church. When they arrived, he said to them: “You know how I lived the whole time I was with you, from the first day I came into the province of Asia. I served the Lord with great humility and with tears and in the midst of severe testing by the plots of my Jewish opponents.

Acts 20:17-38 You know that I have not hesitated to preach anything that would be helpful to you but have taught you publicly and from house to house. I have declared to both Jews and Greeks that they must turn to God in repentance and have faith in our Lord Jesus.

Acts 20:17-38 “And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.

Acts 20:17-38 “Now I know that none of you among whom I have gone about preaching the kingdom will ever see me again. Therefore, I declare to you today that I am innocent of the blood of any of you. For I have not hesitated to proclaim to you the whole will of God. Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers.

Acts 20:17-38 Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood. I know that after I leave, savage wolves will come in among you and will not spare the flock. Even from your own number men will arise and distort the truth in order to draw away disciples after them. So be on your guard! Remember that for three years I never stopped warning each of you night and day with tears.

Acts 20:17-38 In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” When Paul had finished speaking, he knelt down with all of them and prayed. They all wept as they embraced him and kissed him. What grieved them most was his statement that they would never see his face again. Then they accompanied him to the ship.

Covenantal Leadership 1.A primal gift, a costly sacrifice, that both marks and changes life “Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers. Be shepherds of the church of God, which he bought with his own blood.” v.28 God took the initiative! He reached out to us with love through Jesus Christ while we were his enemies.

Covenantal Leadership 2.In response to the primal gift, promises are made and obligations accepted “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.” (v. 24) God’s call and charge to Paul shaped and directed his life and ministry

Sometimes leaders, by definition, will have to challenge their followers, their communities, and their constituencies.” –Rob.

Covenantal Leadership 3.Life is then lived within the bonds of gift and promise, a life of fidelity As we see in Acts 20, and in so many other places, Paul sought to be faithful in every dimension of life – living with humility and passion in the face of trials (v.19), teaching/preaching (v.20, 27), obeying the Spirit (v.22), completing his assignment (v.24), not coveting (v.33), and working hard so that he could be generous and care for others (v.34-35)

Covenantal Leadership 3.Life is then lived within the bonds of gift and promise, a life of fidelity There is no substitute for being faithful to the work that God has given each of us Even in the face of challenges (widows overlooked), controversy (gentiles in?), or opposition (wolves), we must remain faithful to God and the divine calling on our lives

Leadership, especially in the church, will be deepened when we become aware of its covenantal nature: leaders are in covenant with the communities they serve. And in the church, leaders are in covenant with God. These covenantal understandings of leadership remind us that it is not about us…

Covenantal Leadership it’s about God and what God has done and is doing. Like all Christians, leaders have also made promises. ‘I have decided to follow Jesus,’ we sing, ‘no turning back.’ We are people under promise and we have promises to keep.As leaders, then, in response to the gift and under the promise, we are to live lives characterized by fidelity.”
