Screen Captures for Study Materials Memory-context effects of screen color in multiple-choice and fill-in tests Gustavo Prestera, Roy Clariana, and Andrew Peck This slide deck contains a sampling of screen captures from the online treatment materials developed for this study. The slides are intended to give you a sense for what the study participants experienced.

Screen Resolution Dialog The program detects the current screen resolution and raises this alert if it is something other than 800 x 600. The proctor clicks “Change” and the screen resolution is changed accordingly. It is changed back when the learner quits the program.

Study Introduction This is the first screen the participant sees.

Treatment Selection The participant is randomly assigned a card containing one of the symbols below and a unique participant number.

Demographics This screen collects some basic demographic information about the participant.

Course Introduction This screen introduces the actual course content, motivation.

Main Menu The menu shows all 5 module titles and the posttest. Each button rolls over. The message on the right changes as the leaner proceeds through the course.

Content Screens This is a content screen. Note the navigation bar on the left and the blue border that forms the color context.

Content Screens As the learner proceeds through this module, the page titles are checked.

Content - Context Colors A different color was randomly assigned to each lesson.

Fill-in-the-blank Practice Example of fill-in practice item. The program accommodates for different spellings and all responses were inspected for alternate spellings that were not accounted for in the program.

Fill-in-the-blank Feedback On the left is an example of corrective feedback and on the right is an example of positive feedback.

Multiple-Choice Practice Example of multiple-choice practice item. The test items are paraphrased from the practice ones.

Multiple-Choice Feedback On the left is an example of corrective feedback and on the right is an example of positive feedback.

Lesson-end Transition At the end of each lesson, a transition screen appears, sending the learner back to the menu.

Menu – Checked Upon returning to the menu, the completed lesson is checked and the next one is activated. When all lessons are completed, the participant takes the posttest.

Fill-in Posttest The same screen color assigned to each lesson is used again for each test item screen. Depending on the condition, the screen color either matches or does not match the one used in the lesson.

Multiple-Choice Posttest As with the fill-in test items, the multiple-choice test screens were assigned screen colors that either matched or mismatched the ones shown in the lesson.

Opportunity for Corrections With the multiple-choice posttest items, participants had the option of changing their answer or moving on to the next question.

Posttest - Summary After completing the 30-item posttest, the participant views this summary screen.

Learner Feedback After completing the posttest, participants are asked to provide feedback on the course itself. This information is used to make modifications to the course for future studies.

Topic-Color Test The learner is asked to match the appropriate color to each theory.

Favorite Color It was suggested to us that we run a correlation to see if favorite color influenced color selection on the topic-color test. It did not.

Color Blindness Test A series of 6 color blindness test plates (left) were shown to participants. The summary screen (bottom right) gives the participant feedback.

Study End This is the last screen the participant sees. All menu items are checked and on the right side, instructions are provided.
