CENTRE FOR INFRASTRUCTURE SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION AND URBAN PLANNING (CiSTUP) IISc, Bangalore TRANSPORTATION Planning & TRAFFIC ENGINEERING Invited Lecture by Prof. Chandra R. Bhat CENTRE FOR INFRASTRUCTURE SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORTATION AND URBAN PLANNING (CiSTUP) IISc, Bangalore TRANSPORTATION Planning & TRAFFIC ENGINEERING Invited Lecture by Prof. Chandra R. Bhat Venue: Venue: Golden Jubilee Seminar Hall Civil Engg. Dept Date: Date: 9 th April’10 Time: Time: 11:30 AM Coffee/Tea: Coffee/Tea: 11:15 AM Dr. Chandra R. Bhat is the Adnan Abou-Ayyash Centennial Professor in Transportation Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. He also recently served as the Associate Chairman of the Department of Civil, Architectural & Environmental Engineering. Dr. Bhat is recognized nationally and internationally as a leading expert in the area of travel demand modeling and travel behavior analysis. His substantive research interests include land-use and travel demand modeling, activity-based travel modeling, policy evaluation of the effect of transportation control and congestion pricing measures on traffic congestion and mobile-source emissions, marketing research of competitive positioning strategies for transportation services, use of non-motorized modes of travel, and physical health and transportation. He has authored several book chapters focusing on improved methods for choice modeling in general and land use-travel demand modeling in particular. Dr. Bhat has provided resource papers/primers at leading conferences and symposiums, and has several published articles in journals and transportation books. Dr. Bhat received 2004 Walter L. Huber Award and the 2005 James Laurie Prize from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) in recognition of his contributions to “innovative methods in transportation systems analysis and modeling.” He also received the 2006 Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Company Award for Excellence in Engineering Teaching, awarded by the College of Engineering at UT Austin, and the Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award, awarded by the UT Graduate School. Dr. Bhat won the 2007 Pyke Johnson Award from the Transportation Research Board (TRB), 2008 Wilbur S. Smith Distinguished Transportation Educator Award. Title of the talk: "Activity-Based Travel Modeling: Overview, Applicability and Potential Implementation in Indian Urban Areas" Abstract: Abstract: This presentation will discuss the emerging approaches to modeling activity and travel behavior in the context of current transportation planning issues and policy measures. The specific objectives of this presentation will be to: (1) compare the salient features of the traditional trip-based approach and the emerging activity-based approach to modeling activity and travel behavior, (2) present examples to illustrate how the activity-based approach is conceptually better suited for transportation policy analysis and travel forecasting, (3) highlight the recent developments in modeling activity and travel behavior, and (4) identify the opportunities and scope for collaborative work for Indian and US researchers on modeling activity and travel behavior in multi-cultural contexts. The presentation will also discuss the structure of an activity-based travel platform labeled CEMDAP (for Comprehensive Econometric Microsimulator for Daily Activity-Travel Patterns) developed at the University of Texas at Austin, and applied in the Dallas-Fort Worth and Los Angeles areas. Finally, opportunities for applying such a model system for travel demand analysis in the Indian urban context will be identified. All Are Invited All Are Invited
