Reasons for European Exploration US History

Goals and Objectives Learning Target – I will identify reasons for European colonization in the Americas and its impact. Identify the reasons for colonization, evaluate its impacts, and analyze the success or failure of settlements in North America

I. Temptations A.God 1.In the late 1400 and 1500’s, Christianity was the dominate religion. 2.Most rulers were extremely religious and felt the need to spread Christianity throughout the world. 3.They hoped to convert “savages” to the religion.

I. Temptations B.Gold 1.The lure of gold led most Europeans to explore new territory. 2.European monarchs wanted to acquire gold to strengthen their wealth. 3.Spices (particularly Asian) also motivated many to explore.

I. Temptations C.Glory 1.All European countries wanted more power and glory. 2.In order to gain this power and glory, countries hoped to expand their borders to foreign territories.

II. Effects A.Positive 1.Exchange of goods and ideas between Europe and the Americas. A.Columbian Exchange – Interactions between cultures 1.America to Europe – farming methods, crops, tobacco, chewing gum, canoes, etc. 2.Europe to America – new sources of food, livestock and weapons.

II. Effects B.Negative 1.European disease devastated Native American populations A.SMALL POX, influenza, measles, etc. B.Many natives cultures were almost completely wiped out. 2.Europeans became increasingly involved in West African slave trade.
